TAXCO

THE CITY OF SILVER

Taxco is one the most beautiful cities in the country, formed by splendour of mining in Mexico. It is an expression of our colonial heritage and social space, and safeguards and recreates deeply rooted cultural traditions, as demonstrated by its celebrations during Holy Week. It was founded in a mining area operated by the European businessman, José de la Borda, who built up a huge fortune with which he built the famous Santa Prisca Parish Church.

Tradition can be felt and experienced in each and every one of its cobbled streets. Its houses and buildings preserve the flavour of a Mexico with deep roots and customs, forged by the meeting of two worlds: America and Europe.

The beautiful Santa Prisca Parish Church –from the 18th century- bears witness to and is a symbol of an architectural art created by the boom of immense mineral wealth.

Furthermore, Taxco is a cultural city, which is proud to have been the birthplace of the distinguished playwright from the Spanish golden century, Luan Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza, who is honoured each year with the celebration of the “Alarconian Literary Workshops”.

The Haciendas Del Chorrillo and San Juan Bautista, the San Antonio Chapel and the Casa Borda (Cultural Center) are the pride of this city, which is buried deep in the mountains of the State of Guerrero. Walk through its narrow streets and squares and be transported back in time.

Taxco is acknowledged worldwide for the quality of its silver articles. Centuries of experience in the use of this precious metal have provided its craftsmen with skills that pass from generation to generation; the beauty of their creations can be seen and bought in their shops and workshops.

The City of Silver is surrounded by numerous attractions such as the Cacahuamilpa Caves, Las Granadas Waterfalls, among others. Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc, where the remains of the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtémoc, are kept, is only 30 minutes from the city Iguala, where the First National Flag was born and which is also famous for its beautiful gold craftwork.
